Chesed Spotlight:  Sandra Hecklin

Born in Chattanooga, TN, Sandra Hecklin is the daughter of Katie and Hy Kweller. Sandra attended George Peabody College for Teachers and received her BS in Special Education from the University of Memphis. Sandra also holds a Masters in Education from the College of Charleston.

Sandra learned first-hand the importance of commitment to the Jewish community from her mother, an immigrant from Poland, and her father, a native of Pittsburgh, PA. From her youth, Sandra was a leader in Jewish organizations. Devoted Daughters of Torah, B’nai Brith Girls and the Jewish Federation of Chattanooga Young Leaders all benefited from her enthusiasm and love of community.

In 1981, Sandra moved to Nashville with her husband. They both embraced the Jewish community and took on new roles in leadership. Sandra’s been a member of NCJW, Nashville Section, Hadassah, Ort, West End Synagogue and the Temple. As a member of NCJW, Sandra was an advocate of developing new projects aimed at aiding victims of domestic violence. In addition, Sandra served as co-president of the Nashville Section during its Centennial year. Sandra has served on the boards of CASA, the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation, the Gordon Jewish Community Center, and the Federation. She has used her creativity in each phase of her life, co-creating the Temple’s Mommy and Me program.

The mission statement of Jewish Family Service describes Sandra’s passion for ensuring that members of our community have what’s necessary to navigate life’s transitions. Her commitment to the organization led Sandra to become president of the board and she currently serves as JFS’s Chair of the Life and Legacy initiative.

Sandra is married to Steve Hecklin. Sandra and Steve have two wonderful daughters, Carolyn and Stephanie, who share their lives with two wonderful son-in-laws, Adam Hyatt and Jorie Soskin.  Sandra and Steve are the delighted and proud grandparents of Dylan and Lyla Hyatt and Riley Soskin.
